Round Fish Bowl , 1 Gal (Misc.) Goldfish Help & InformationSmall Tank s (under 15 Gallon s)Hello, my name is Khris, and I am very knowledgeable with certain types of fish. I’m best with Goldfish , Glo-fish, Plecostomus, Zebra Danios, Koi and Bettas. I hope that this informative email will help you understand more about Goldfish + other types of fish.Goldfish have the capability of growing 11′ (depending on what type you have) and living more than 15 years. Though, in order for this to happen, you need to be taking proper care of your Goldfish , meaning you will need an extremely large tank and heavy filtration.Goldfish grow very big, and produce tremendous amounts of waste. In small spaces, waste levels can go up very quickly. In small tanks, it is much harder to maintain proper water quality because waste can build up quickly. Even with proper water changes in a tank under 15 Gallon s, you will still end up with a dirty and cloudy tank before the next water change. For Comet/Common Goldfish , a 60+ Gallon tank and double the filtration is essential, since they grow over 11′ and produce lots of waste. For Fancy/Fantail Goldfish , a 25+ Gallon tank with double the filtration is essential, since they grow over 6′ and produce lots of waste. All types of Goldfish will live more than 15 years if you have a large tank and filter, and do proper water changes every week.In a smaller tank, you are more open to illnesses such as Fin Rot, Ick, and other annoying pests, parasites and diseases. Many illnesses can easily be caused by stress.Though it is true that Goldfish will grow to the size of their tank, it doesn’t mean it is healthy, nor does it mean the fish will be happy. Their growth will be stunted, which means the outer part of the Goldfish stops growing due to the lack of space, but the organs and insides keep growing. Not only is this extremely painful to the fish, but it is also irreversible and permanently damages organs. The fish doesn’t literately explode, but the stunting keeps working until the organs eventually shut down.Goldfish are very hardy, and can survive through lots of stuff, but it certainly doesn’t mean we can abuse them whenever we want. Many people don’t look at Goldfish as actual living creatures, just like kittens and puppies. But they are. They have feelings, they can feel pain, just like us. They are living creatures.Goldfish are actually quite smart. As long as the action is repeated, the Goldfish can remember it for more than a month! That is far more than 3 seconds! Goldfish can be trained to do tricks, such as swim through hoops, and beg for food.Bettas & Small Tank s(under 3 Gallon s)It is VERY common that people keep Bettas in tiny bowls and tanks as decorations, and gifts for irresponsible 3 year olds. However, small bowls and tanks under 3 Gallon s are NOT suitable for any living creature.Bettas are tropical fish, and require a heater unless the room is heated at a stable temperature of 80° F. You CANNOT heat anything under 3 Gallon s safely, as many heaters designed for anything under 3 Gallon s often malfunction, or under-heat the tank, or even overheat the tank, which poses as a fire hazard.Just as any other fish, a filter is required to keep a Betta healthy. A filter provides oxygen for the fish to breathe, and a filter is also required to cycle a tank. Cycling a tank is the process of growing beneficial bacteria inside the filter that helps break down waste. If you do not cycle your tank, or you do not have a properly working filter, you will eventually end up with an Ammonia Spike. Ammonia is highly toxic for fish when in high levels. The bare minimum for a Betta is 3 Gallon s, but a 5 Gallon is MUCH better. Remember, the smaller the tank, the harder it is to maintain proper water quality. Many Pet Stores claim that Bettas enjoy smaller spaces, but this is completely FALSE. When given the opportunity, Bettas can be VERY active. The bigger the tank, the more healthier and happier the Betta is.Many Pet Stores claim that Bettas cannot be housed with any other fish. Again, this is completely FALSE. Bettas will ONLY attack other fish that have long, pretty tails, such as Guppies. They see those long, flowing, pretty tails as other Bettas. |
